Dream Big. Start Small. Enjoy the Journey.

Updated: Feb 23, 2019

I am really enjoying this entrepreneur journey!

Seriously! I am REALLY enjoying this entrepreneur life. It's challenging! It helps me see myself in a new, awesome-er light! It's developing skills and talents within me that I never knew I had! And I am meeting some amazing people along the way!

In fact, I recently participated in a Facebook Live interview with Jessica Rodriguez (one of my #WCW in business) from the thedaydreamachiever.com as part of her #WomenRising series. If you want to check out this interview, here's the link --->> How to Manage Business Finances {to Create More Profits} in 30 Minutes a Week.

Now, the interview is not the point of this post. The point is something that Jessica and I talked about in the interview.

If you have learned anything about me (other than the large number of kids I have), you have probably learned that my dreams for my life and business are massive... and I bet yours are too!

I've learned on this journey that many people get overwhelmed by all of the money, exposure, and resources they need to make their massive dream happen exactly how they envision it.

They want tomorrow's vision to happen today!

So they fall into one of two traps:

  1. They over-extend themselves by trying to do everything in that massive vision now, OR

  2. They stay at a standstill while trying to pull together the resources they need to implement the vision exactly as they saw it.

Let me give you an example:

A few weeks ago, I met a wonderful young woman (we'll call her Vivian) who dreams of hosting weekend and week-long marriage retreats for struggling couples. She had just gotten all of her degrees and certifications and was struggling to save money for the purchase of a property that would be used to host those retreats.

I was absolutely loving the ambition, but saving the money for that property kind of had her vision stalled. And it didn't have to!

How do you achieve a massive vision like Vivian's?

By GROWING into it.

Here's how you do that:

The first step is to really brain dump every aspect of the vision that you possibly can. Put the vision on paper, people!

What are you going to accomplish? Who are you going to serve? How are you going to serve them? What are the details behind the services you offer? What about locations, frequency and the team that's going to help you do all of that work?

In Vivian's case, we needed to dig into the elements of the retreats such as, how many couples? How many workshops? Who would host all of the workshops? What about food? What will the property look like and so much more.

There are so many details that go into a massive vision and we need to make sure we capture all of it. So whether you grab a spiral notebook or pop into your favorite note-taking app, take the time to write out as many details about the dream as you possibly can.

Now that you have brain dumped your vision, it's time to start taking it apart and finding the smaller pieces within the big vision. How you do this will change depending on the vision.

  • Does your vision have multiple income and service streams?

  • Does the dream include multiple variations of the same offering?

  • Are there plans for multiple locations?

  • What about differing target markets?

In some cases, you may find that your pieces are all really cool add-ons to a single core service. In the case of Vivian, we discovered that her core element was the marriage counseling and that the other elements such as the group activities, romantic overnight stay, luxurious property (owned by her) were add-ons that made the package better.

Finding any way that you can take that massive dream and break it down into manageable, bit-sized pieces is your goal here.

Now that you have some manageable pieces to you vision, it's time to review those pieces to figure out where you should get started. In the case of Vivian, we had to start with the core element of this business, which is the marriage counseling and building that practice. In your case, it may be:

  • the revenue stream that has the lowest initial overhead

  • the piece that has the fastest growth potential

  • the segment that best fits into your current lifestyle (especially, if you're still at a 9-to-5)

  • the portion that best aligns with your current skill sets

As much as I would love to give you a hard and fast rule for this step, it really is dependent upon where you are right now in your finances, your skills, you lifestyle and maybe even your family dynamic. The point is to find the piece that you can begin to execute (with excellence) right now!

You know where you're starting and you know where you're going. Now you just need to build a rough roadmap for how you will eventually add on the other pieces to build your big vision.

Why do I say rough?

Because life happens, things change, and opportunities you could not have ever anticipated can open up at any time. A key to being an entrepreneur is having a plan that is clear enough to guide you and flexible enough to allow you to seize an opportunity that you may not have planned for.

Since you already have the pieces on paper, this should be pretty easy. All you really need to add are the milestones you need to reach before you add the next piece. For example, Vivian can start with coaching couples 1-on-1 and then add 1-day workshops with group activities once she has at least 30 couples.

The milestones may be revenue, number of clients, number of events, number of social media followers or whatever indicator you think is appropriate in relation to your vision. The idea is to draft a roadmap for growing into your vision that says "I will add Piece B when I reach X number of clients/revenue/followers."

5. Get started. NOW!

I feel as if it should go without saying, but I want to say it anyway. You have a vision. You have a starting point. You have a plan. All that's left is to TAKE ACTION!

So be like Nike and just do it.
